Dining Chair Buying Guide: Sizes, Materials & Comfort

A dining chair should fit both the table and the person using it. Start with measurements, then compare the frame, upholstery and practical details. Browse Brightly Home dining chairs as you work through this guide.

Measure the chair and the table together

Write down the seat height, overall width and depth, total back height and armrest height where applicable. Measure from the floor to the lowest part of your table's edge or supporting apron, then check the clear width between its legs.

A 45–48 cm seat is common with a dining table around 75 cm high. Treat that as a starting point: the table edge, cushioning and your preferred sitting position affect comfort. Compare with a chair you already enjoy using, and allow for the 1–3 cm measurement variation noted on our product pages.

Check how many chairs will fit

Use the chair's widest point rather than the seat width alone. Include gaps between neighbouring chairs and leave room to pull them out. A broad curved back, projecting arms or angled legs can need more space than a narrow armless design.

For example, the Benenden Dining Chair has a listed overall width of 54 cm, depth of 55 cm and seat height of 46 cm. Two chairs occupy 108 cm of width before gaps are added. Compare that with the clear space between your table legs.

Arms, backrests and everyday comfort

Armrests may be useful for relaxed dining but need clearance beneath the table. Check both their height and their width. Consider how the backrest supports you and whether the seat depth suits longer meals. In a compact room, mark the footprint on the floor and check the main walkway with a chair occupied.

Understand the frame and finish

Look for the actual timber species in the specification. A walnut finish can be applied to ash or another timber, so colour and construction should be compared separately. The Qienn Ash Wood & Rattan Dining Chair, for example, is described in its current specification as ash wood with rattan.

Choose upholstery for your household

Compare the exact fabric or leather description and the product's care guidance. Bouclé and velvet add texture; smoother upholstery creates a different appearance and feel. PU faux leather and genuine leather are different materials. Do not assume that a fabric is stain-resistant, pet-proof or suitable for commercial use unless that has been confirmed for the exact product.

If colour matching matters, ask what sample information is available. For a personal fabric choice, enquire about our Customer's Own Material upholstery service; eligibility and cost depend on the product and fabric.

Confirm the pack quantity, assembly and delivery

Check whether the advertised price is for one chair or a set, and whether a minimum order applies. Some chairs arrive fully assembled; others require assembly. Read the selected product's details rather than assuming every chair follows the same arrangement.

Check the production estimate and delivery arrangements before ordering. Measure doorways, stairs and lifts, and ask for packaged dimensions if access is tight. Read our delivery information or send your product choice and postcode to our team.
