Start with your kitchen measurements, then choose the style. A stool needs to suit the height of the worktop, leave room for your knees and fit alongside neighbouring seats. Use this guide to compare Brightly Home bar stools and counter stools.
Measure the worktop and the space underneath
Record both the floor-to-top height and the floor-to-underside height. A thick worktop, supporting rail or deep apron reduces usable knee space. Compare the published seat height, not the total stool height, which includes the backrest.
As a starting point, a 60–65 cm seat is often considered for a worktop around 90 cm high. Taller surfaces require a different seat height. Check the actual gap beneath your worktop and, where possible, compare it with seating you already find comfortable. For a worked example, read our kitchen-island stool height guide.
Plan the width before deciding how many stools to buy
Measure the clear seating length between walls, cabinets, legs and other obstructions. Use the stool's widest dimension, including its arms or base, and leave space between seats and at each end. Allow additional room for a swivel seat or a frequently used walkway.
For example, two Benenden stools have a combined base width of 114 cm before any gaps are added. Three have a combined base width of 171 cm, so a 180 cm island would leave only 9 cm in total for the gaps and ends. A simple “three stools per 180 cm” rule would be misleading for this design. Mark the footprints on the floor and check how people will sit down and pass behind them.
Compare the current product specifications
- Benenden Solid Oak Bar Stools: sold as a pair, with a listed 65 cm seat height and a 57 × 58 cm base per stool. Self-assembly is required.
- Sunbury Bouclé Bar Stool: compare the listed 65 cm and 70 cm seat-height options and confirm the selected version before ordering.
- Fora Bar Stool: contact us to confirm the available height and corresponding armrest measurements before purchase.
Dimensions can vary by 1–3 cm because of manual measurement. Allow a margin where the fit is tight.
Choose materials for daily use
Check the timber species separately from the finish: a walnut-coloured finish does not necessarily mean solid walnut. Compare the upholstery description and care instructions for the exact product. Linen, velvet, bouclé, genuine leather and PU faux leather have different textures and care needs; one material label does not establish stain resistance or commercial suitability.
Think about the backrest, footrest and armrests as well as appearance. Check whether the arms will pass beneath the worktop and whether the seat can be moved without blocking doors or appliances.
Check the price, assembly and delivery
Confirm whether the price is for one stool or a pair, then check the quantity in your basket. Read the product's production estimate separately from its delivery arrangements. A product being available to order does not by itself establish a dispatch date.
See our delivery information for charges and access guidance, and contact Brightly Home with the product, selected size, quantity and postcode if you have a deadline. For fabric personalisation, ask about our Customer's Own Material service.
